Fragrant water lilies are one of the most easily recognized of all the aquatic plants growing in Bermuda and other temperate and tropical climates around the world. Fine examples of these exotic flowers can be seen growing in the fountain pools in front of the City Hall in Hamilton and in various locations around the island. Beautiful large white or occasionally pink many-petaled flowers with yellow centres and bright green leaves up to twelve inches in diameter. The flowers float on the water and are divided into two main categories, hardy and tropical. Hardy water lilies bloom only during the day but tropical water lilies can bloom either day or night. Water lilies were first introduced into the botanic gardens of England in 1786.
